Description:

The greatest sense of unfinished discovery during our month and a half in Morocco came as we returned from a short, four-day trip into the High Atlas, whose austere landscape left a profound impression. Meeting people who live in tents 2000 metres above sea level is unforgettable. In just a few days we experienced the extraordinary range of weather in the Moroccan mountains: temperatures above 20 degrees under a cloudless sky, followed the very next day by heavy snow and thunderstorms. The artwork was inspired by the rug-making style of the Kharita region.

In Moroccan usage, Khairta means a map—one created from the accumulated experiences and imagination of the women who weave it. This rug-making technique demands patience and precision, which is why Kharita rugs are often made by older women in the tribe; weaving a single rug can take as long as 3 months. They also feature varied, vivid colours and colourful geometric patterns that evoke mountains and high-altitude villages.

The poster was produced by hand using screen printingwith overlapping layers of colour, creating an impression of depth and more colours than were actually used. Every copy differs slightly—just as each village has its own rhythm, every print is one of a kind.
